I don't want to give away too much but all I can say is if you're a fan of fairytale-esque books with a classic, whimsical feel, this one is perfect for you. This is a standalone, so everything was wrapped up (I won't say good or bad) but I LOVED how everything transpired. Of course, things eventually unravel and secrets are revealed - and OH MY GOSH THE FEELS. It IS a traveling book but I didn't mind that one bit. There's a lot more plot to it but I'd rather not give anything else away. He also gives her advice on how to 'win girls' and its just so funny I can't. He's constantly impressed by her fighting skills (did I mention she's a badass?) even amidst her size. They absolutely hate each other but end up developing such a sweet and hilarious friendship - even though Niklaas still believes her to be a boy. Aurora is stubborn and serious and Niklaas LOVES to get under her skin.

He tells her he will help her so long as she leads him to 'Aurora', obviously not realizing its her all along.

Niklaas, the sassy prince from a neighboring country, rescues her, thinking she's her brother. Now, she's parading around as a boy basically and gets herself captured. Her brother has been captured by the corrupt people who stole her kingdom. The only resemblance is the character's names (some.) Otherwise, its a completely unique story line!īasically, Aurora is an exiled princess who is trying to gather an army to retake her throne. Its somehow marketed as a retelling of Sleeping Beauty. I think several people who didn't maybe came into it with false expectations. The only good thing I can say is that there is less blushing and swooning and dreaminess and love triangles within this book than the dreaded Defy. She is as manly as one would expect, which is to say, she isn't. I can scarely recall being so bored reading an YA fantasy. It is literally an adventure across the land with almost no danger, no excitement, and completely boredom.

The entire book is the yawn-inducing equivalent of The Hobbit with more romance and swooning. Deal with it, bitches.' Get used to having things go completely unexplained for the entire fucking book. It's like 'once upon a time, there was a magical place. There is no explanation of why things are the way they are. The setting is grand without an ounce of place, sense, or history. I'm not exaggerating when I say that it is a fucking mess. It seems to be a selling tool for name-dropping and nothing else. I'm not sure why the fuck Game of Thrones was even used for a comparison. In fact, the only thing that the book doesn't seem to resemble is the advertised Game of Thrones from the blurb. Everything is thrown in with little explanation. Indeed, 'Why the fuck not,' seems to be the overriding theme of the book. This book is a mess of an amalgamation of Mulan, Lord of the Rings, Sleeping Beauty, Hans Christian Andersen's The Wild Swans, with a dash of Little Red Riding Hood, because why the fuck not.
